Omaha is a derivative of the ever popular game Texas Hold’em only with two extra cards being dealt to each player before the flop. CelebPoker.com has upped the speed and consistency of its games and is now giving players a chance to play and/or learn Omaha poker.

How to Play:

Omaha Poker is a game derived from the popular Texas Hold’em. In Omaha poker, players play with a dealer button just like on Hold’em. Before the game begins the player immediately to the right of the button posts the "small blind", typically half a small bet (for example, $1 in a $2/$4 Omaha game). The player immediately clockwise the small blind posts the "big blind", which is always a full small bet ($2 in a $2/$4 Omaha game). Now, each player receives his or her four hole cards. Betting action begins around the table, starting with the player immediately to the left the big blind.

Next, just like in Hold’Em, the "flop" is dealt face-up on the board. The flop is the first three community cards available to all active players. Play begins with the active player immediately clockwise the button. All bets and raises occur in small bets (increments of $2 in a $2/$4 game).

When betting action is completed for the flop round, the "turn" is dealt face-up on the board. The turn is the fourth community card in an Omaha game. Play begins with the active player immediately clockwise the button. On this round of Omaha, betting doubles from the small bet to the big bet. In a $2/$4 game, betting on the turn is done in $4 increments.

When betting action is completed for the turn round, the "river" is dealt face-up on the board. The river is the fifth and final community card in Omaha poker. Betting begins with the active player immediately clockwise the button.

If there is more than one remaining player when the final betting round is complete, the last bettor or raiser shows his or her cards. If there was no bet on the final round, the player immediately clockwise the button shows his or her cards. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. In Omaha poker, players must use two and only two of their four hole poker cards in combination with three of the cards from the board. In the event of identical hands, the pot will be equally divided between the players with the best hands.

To find out more visit http://www.celebpoker.com

Titan Poker offering big payouts to lucky poker players

Get your seat on the world poker tour at Titan Poker Today!

Poker Jackpot Grows Like Lotto Nov 9, 2005

It seems that some poker sites may have stumbled upon a winning combination: take poker tournaments and add in an element of lotto jackpots to spice things up. This is what Titan Poker, a relative newcomer to the world of online poker rooms, is doing with a few of their tournament offerings.

The Maui progressive Sit N Go tournament, for example, offers a $15,000 jackpot if a single player wins a number of consecutive tournaments. So there is effort and skill required, unlike winning the lottery (unless one considers picking the lucky numbers an effort.) The lotto jackpot portion comes in the way the jackpot keeps growing week by week until someone “hits” it by winning the right number of consecutive events.

Titan Poker is claiming to offer $1 million dollars a month in prizes, and with events like the Maui and the Rio progressive tournaments, it might be possible. The Fort Knox Jackpot Sit N Go Tournaments are the latest offering, with a grand prize of $100,000 to the player who can win six events in a row, on top of the prizes for the individual events.

Relevant Links

Titan Poker

Basic Poker Strategy

Poker Strategy 101

(JND) - There are several excellent books on Poker Strategy, and this article will only attempt to deal with the basics that must be mastered by the beginner. A list of articles on the material summarized here appears below.

Hand strength:
Once a player has mastered the rank of hands, it is more important to realize their relative strength at a poker table. Approximately half the five-card hands in any given game will be less than a pair of twos, but only about one-fourth of five-card hands in the long run will be better than a pair of Aces. A full house is such a good hand that it is far more likely to be the best hand on the table than a 7 high (the lowest possible hand) is to be the lowest hand at a given table.

One mistake made by many beginners is to bet hands that are unlikely to win in the showdown, hoping that they will eventually improve. In the long run, this is a losing strategy against experienced players. For example, in draw poker, any hand less than a pair should generally be folded at the earliest opportunity. In other games, such as Texas Hold 'Em where only two cards are dealt before the betting round, unmatched combinations of low cards are unlikely to result in a winning hand.

Improvement and pot odds:
Athough improvement is possible with virtually every hand, most beginners forget that players with better hands may also improve their hands on the draw, and that in the long run the player with the better hand before a draw is likely to have the better hand after the draw as well. Generally, if you have reason to believe that your opponent has a better hand than you at any given point of a betting round, the appropriate action is to fold. However, if the money in the pot is large compared to the bet required to stay in (the "pot odds"), a call is possible. This is particularly the case when a player is attempting to fill a straight or flush. However, the approximate odds of filling an outside straight on the next draw is about 6-1, and the odds of similarly filling a flush is about 5-1. As such, calling is not recommended if the money that could be won gives a lesser payout on the bet.

Play the Party Poker Million Tournament - Be the next Party Poker Millionaire

One bet made by beginners that rarely pays off is to fill an "inside straight" - a straight with one of the middle cards missing. The odds against filling such a straight on a single draw are roughly 13-1 against and should not be considered unless the pot odds are particularly good.

Bluffing:
Beginners, even talented beginners, see bluffing as a way to "buy" the pot. However, bluffing seldom works against poor players (who tend to overestimate the strength of their hand to begin with) and does not work for long against expert players if a player bluffs too frequently. Although all players should bluff occasionally to make their large bets on good hands look less credible, consistent and constant bluffing generally leads to large losses.

Position play:
Generally, players who have to bet first need stronger hands to open the betting than players who bet later. This is because the raw odds of a better hand being on the table increase based on the number of players who have not had the opportunity to bet. For example, in a six-player game of draw poker, it is recommended that a player check in the first betting position unless they have at least a pair of aces. However, the last player to bet (the dealer) may open the betting if no-one else has spoken with as little as a pair of twos. One expert Hold 'Em player recommends folding if you are the first player to the left of the blind unless you have the strength to raise

Partypoker to deal its 3 billionth hand

Get your party poker bonus - 20% up to $100 - Join the worlds largest online poker room today!!!

Party Poker to Deal 3 hand number 3 billion
(PRLEAP.COM) Any minute now, the 3 billionth hand will be played at PartyPoker!
To celebrate this landmark, we’re rewarding many players with special jackpots and the chance to become a millionaire.

These will be followed by amazing $20,000 freeroll tournaments played an hour after the jackpots have been awarded. As the Tour has continued to see the phenomenal growth of poker continue on into its Fourth Season, the WPT feels that it is time to add another event to the list of tournaments that are already being vied for. The sixteen event schedule has been joined by the Borgata Winter Poker Open, to be played at the Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ, from January 20th through February 1st.

The Borgata Winter Poker Open will be primarily a No-Limit Hold 'Em event. Buy-ins for the tournaments will range from $500 to $2,500 and there will be a $500 Limit Event and a $300 Ladies' No-Limit event held during the tournament's twelve day run. Everything will be capped off, of course, by the $9,700 (plus $300) WPT Championship event that will start on January 29th.

Get a ticket into the world poker tour

The first stop the World Poker Tour made at the Borgata in September was a rousing success. Five hundred fifteen players stepped to the felt during the Championship Event, which was won by New Jersey poker veteran Al Ardebili. Additionally, with only two stops on the East Coast by the World Poker Tour (the September Borgata tournament and the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods in Connecticut), it adds another eastern stop for the premiere poker tour and an additional chance for the poker players that aren't in the poker hotspots of Las Vegas and California another opportunity to earn their way into the WPT Championship in April 2006.

The additional stop will put a tremendous strain on the skills of its professional combatants, however. The WPT will be wrapping up the World Poker Open at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS, on January 23rd, leaving a very short turnaround time for players to get their "A" game primed for battle in Atlantic City. In all, more than half (nine) of the WPT's Season Four schedule of seventeen events will be contested in the first four months of 2006. With the plentitude of major tournaments, poker players and fans will be exhausted by the time the WPT Championship is played out at the end of April!

Having handed out over $100 million in purses during its first three years, the WPT's Fourth Season is shaping up to be the biggest and best of the Tour's history. It is possible (and will be pretty close) that the Tour will crack the $200 million mark this season. In all, the poker should be very exciting and the addition of a new stop on the Tour marks that the WPT is continuing in its growth and will be around for some time to shape the face of the world of poker!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bonuscodespartypoker.blogspot.com/2005/11/world-poker-tour-adds-new-poker-to-its.html' title='World Poker Tour adds a new poker to its 16 event schedule. The tournament, being held to benefit the T. J. Martell Foundation, will be an evening of hot poker, hotter music and still hotter young ladies, fitting in with Vince's reputation as one of the legendary wild men of the music industry!

Besides being an evening of fun and frivolity with Vince, it is also a cause that is near to his heart. Through his own efforts, Neil has helped to raise over one million dollars for the T. J. It is an excellent reason to have a great time for a great cause!

The players will vie for a prize pool that will total $50,000, with the final table being the beneficiaries of the bounty. Seats are limited to the first 150 entries, with a buy-in of $500 plus a $40 entry fee. Immediately following the tournament will be the awards ceremonies and a live auction with a very special emcee that will be revealed at the moment of the show. If you can't get into the tournament, then there are guest passes available for those not playing.

Some of the loveliest ladies who entertain in Las Vegas will be joining in with Vince for what should be several hours of fun and poker. Vince himself was enthusiastic about the tournament, saying, "I'm very excited about the tournament! We have kicked this idea around for a while and it just makes sense, since I live in Las Vegas and The Joint at the Hard Rock is one of my favorite venues. Texas Hold 'Em is a kick ass game and when you add the girls to the mix, it only gets better. I hope my fans will come out and make this a very special night because it is a very special cause to me."

Learn to play poker at PartyPoker - The worlds largets online poker room!

R. The ‘Jackpot Hands’ are sure to add a lot of excitement to the already thrilling Final Table action.

In order to guarantee the payment of such exciting jackpot prizes, Cinda entered into insurance agreements with ASU International, a subsidiary of HCC Insurance Holdings (NYSE: HCC), and National Indemnity Company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRKa). The $100 Million Jackpot Prize is reinsured by National Indemnity Company - one of the few insurers in the world that could guarantee such a large prize.

In order to make sure this event will be a world class event, Cinda has recruited former WSOP tournament director Matt Savage as tournament director. “It is difficult to come up with innovations that add excitement to the game of poker, but the unique “jackpot hands” concept is just such an innovation”, said Tournament Director Matt Savage. “It’s difficult to beat the WSOP in terms of excitement, but I think we’ve succeeded in this capacity”

Cinda has also recruited a world class online sponsor to back this exciting event. Noble Poker - www.noblepoker.com - is the tournament’s exclusive online sponsor. Noble Poker is owned and operated by Empire Online (EOL.L), one of the leading online poker operators in the world. Noble Poker also acquired the tournament’s naming rights and has aptly named it “The Noble Poker $100 Million Mega Tournament”.
“The concept behind the $100 Million Extravaganza is an innovative way to draw players from across the world,” said Noam Lanir of Empire Online. “We’re wondering how someone could maintain a poker face if they’re holding a Royal Flush at the final table.”

More information about the “Noble Poker $100 Million Extravaganza” can be found at www.noblepoker.com.

Game Show Network (GSN) To offer High Stakes Poker Tournaments

Cold Hard Cash to Costar in GSN’s New Poker Show

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“High Stakes Poker” Invites Players to Play With $100,000 of Their Own Money

Every night in Vegas, big-time players risk more money playing poker than the average American pays for four years of private college education. But unless someone has the bankroll of a small African country and is willing to have a seat, there is no way to witness the kind of action that takes place in these high stakes ring games.

The Game Show Network is about to change that. Filming for the show “High Stakes Poker” is set to begin next week at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, where high-stakes poker players and poker hobbyists with deep pockets will play with a big chunk of their own money.

Buy-in for the no-limit Texas hold’em game is $100,000, and players will be able to rebuy any time they want. Details, such as blind structure and time of game sessions, are still being hammered out, said Dennis Johnson, the director of publicity and corporate communications for GSN. The preliminary list of players includes Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman, and Dr. Jerry Buss, who when he’s not playing poker on television, own the L.A. Lakers. This list could change, Johnson said.

Although the players are playing with their own money, they will receive some sort of compensation for appearing on the show, Johnson said. This is one of the details still being discussed.

The show will be filmed for GSN by Henry Orenstein’s HSOR, a production company responsible for the “Poker Superstars” franchise that airs on Fox Sports. Burke looks at his hand by peering under an upturned corner of his cards. Photo by Scott Anderson, Journal Times.

Michael Burke

RACINE — The Journal Times paid me to play cards Sunday. Not just any cards, but the white-hot game of Texas Hold ’Em.

Tough job, huh? Yes, I know.

And here’s one big secret I learned the hard way: Beware of pocket 10s.

But let me back up a little. Rick and Lisa Schue had cooked up a Texas Hold ’Em tournament back in May 2004 so the Racine Zoo could buy a giraffe.

“My wife’s a big animal lover,” Rick said. They raised and donated about $5,500. That paid for a male giraffe named Chas.

Tragically, Chas died last Sept. 1 in an accident, so Rick Schue organized another tournament for Sunday at Infusino’s Banquet Hall.

Announcing a Texas Hold ’Em tournament is like announcing you’ll give away bundles of free Angus steaks. Salivating men come from many counties away to get in on the deal. Schue said Sunday’s 111 players came from Illinois and from all over Wisconsin.

We could have covered the event the usual way although for a reporter, it’s not easy to adequately write about 120 poker players — who most of the time are assiduously hiding their cards. But what if we actually played?

Schue readily agreed to waive the $50 entry fee so I could report on the event from the best seat in the house: A player’s perspective.

Now all I had to do was learn how to play.

Of course, I knew how to play poker and some of its variations.

In Texas Hold ’Em, two cards are dealt to each player face down. Then three are dealt face up in the middle (the “flop”) followed by one more face up (the “turn”), and finally, the last card also face up (the “river”). Each player makes his best hand from the two in his “pocket” and the five common cards.

I knew the bare bones of the game. But that’s like saying I also knew how to fly an airplane because I’d seen the inside of a cockpit once or twice. So two days before the tournament, fellow Journal Times reporter Brent Killackey — who I suspect would rather be playing Texas Hold ’Em for a living than covering schools for the newspaper — gave me a crash course. He taught me terms like “muck,” “all in,” “big blind,” “little blind” and “string raise.”

“This is a game of betting — not a game of cards,” Killackey said. His advice: Stay out of any hand unless I had strong pocket (down) cards, and then bet strongly to scare others out before the flop.

I also spent some time cramming some information gleaned from Texas Hold ’Em Web sites.

Sign up at partypoker.com and get a 20% Deposit Bonus up to $100

Finally, just before Sunday’s tournament started, the top winner of last year’s local contest gave me these golden rules:

1. Be patient — that is, don’t enter a hand unless you have some strong cards; and

2. Don’t bluff.

Jon Fecteau, whose company, Pocket Aces, ran the tournament, also gave the entire room some rules. The No. 1 rule was to show sportsmanship at all times.

“Save the drama for your mama,” he quipped.

We started with $700 in chips.

On the first hand, five of the 10 players at our table stayed in, but I wasn’t one of them. It came down to Stuart Bernett Jr. facing off over a $300 pot with, and losing to, Dennis Held Jr. Bernett quickly bought more chips, as players could do during the first hour.

On the fourth hand, I thought I’d gotten cards worth playing, and got in with an ace and an eight. But when things never got any better, I folded and watched two fives win the pot.

On the next hand, I had two fives myself, in the pocket. But when Ken Zaehler bet heavily after the flop, I folded.

So far no great damage.

A couple of hands later, I stayed to the end with two low pairs, fours and sevens. Andrew Kerekes, immediately to my left, had pocket kings. It was to be a sign of things to come for the 18-year-old Caledonia resident, as he began amassing by far the largest pile of chips at our table, winning showdown after showdown with great hands.

Later, after I’d lost all my chips and was watching from the sidelines, Kerekes’ mother, Brenda, told me Texas Hold ’Em is one of the family’s favorite pastimes. “We built a table,” she said, and the whole family plays often with friends. The buy-in is usually $10.

“My 15-year-old won $90 last weekend,” Brenda said. Meanwhile, she was watching not just her son Andrew, but her husband, Jim, who was holding his own at a different table.

A couple of hands after losing with my two pairs, I stayed in with a king and a queen. A pair of aces turned up and I bet hard all the way. The last guy still in that hand dropped, and I’d won my first hand. Suddenly my pile of chips looked respectable again. I was ready to keep dishing out punishment.

Then, inevitably, disaster struck. I was dealt a pair of 10s in the pocket. I bet hard again — by this time I was raising $100 at a crack. Somehow, I found myself going all in.

When Cheven Jacoby showed a queen-high flush, I was as startled by the revelation as if someone had snuck up behind and cracked me in the head with a cricket bat.

I was out.

The other players quickly encouraged me to buy more chips and keep playing. However, I hadn’t come prepared for that option, so I thanked them and was the first to leave our table.

Amazingly enough, two other players at our table later lost everything they had and were driven out of the game betting on pairs of pocket 10s.

I bet the next time they came my way, I’d win with those 10s.

Can’t wait for the chance.

PartyGaming Shares Rise as the Poker Slump gets back on track

Worlds Largest Online Poker Room - Party Poker
Why is Party Poker good for you?
Beginners - More beginning poker players learn how to play poker at party poker
Advanced - Make more money playing with the loosest players in the world.

PARTY GAMING UPDATE - (Party Gaming is the parent company of PartyPoker.com)

A good day for the group...and for confidence in the poker industry

Following up on our Online-Casinos.com & InfoPowa report on the positive Party Gaming results and share price yesterday there has been widespread positive comment across the UK media.

Shares of PartyGaming Plc, rose by the most since its June initial public offering after the company said business is recovering from a slowdown in the third quarter. Earlier pessimism had caused a dip of almost 40 percent in the share price since the IPO.

"The whole of the sector will sigh complete relief,'' said Andy Brough, who helps oversee $6.5 billion at Schroder Investment Management in London.

Poker revenue in the fourth quarter so far is 10 percent higher than the average revenue for the third quarter. Sales of PartyGaming's casino games were also `"...very much above expectations,'' Chief Executive Officer Richard Segal said.

On the back of the results the shares rose as much as 11.75 pence, or 15 percent, the biggest gain since the June 27 initial stock offer. They traded at 86.75 pence at 3:20 p.m. Friday in London, giving the company a market value of 3.5 billion pounds ($6.2 billion).

"The picture to date in October is much better,'' Segal said on a conference call. ``We've seen a marked improvement in our performance.''

News of an improved fourth quarter for PartyGaming pushed rival gaming companies' stocks up. Shares of Sportingbet Plc, a U.K. Internet betting company, rose 7.7 percent to 280 pence and Empire Online Ltd. stock gained 7.2 percent to 89.5 pence at 3:20 p.m. in London.

PartyGaming controls 51 percent of the online poker market. Revenue for the three months ended Sept. 30 rose 32 percent to $220 million from $166.1 million, the company reported. That compares with an 81 percent increase in the first half.

The number of days regular users played poker and casino games increased 53 percent. New players totaled 209,372 for PartyPoker.com and 19,991 for the casino business. The average user visits the Web site once every three days, the company said.

Customer retention rates are declining as more casual players come on line. PartyGaming spent 29 percent of revenue acquiring customers in the third quarter.

"The positive current trading update should reinstall some confidence in PartyGaming after last month's interims,'' said Matthew Gerard, an analyst at Investec in London, in a note to investors. He recommends investors buy the stock.

According to research company Christensen Capital Advisors, online poker grew to a $1 billion business in 2004 from $90 million in 2002. He told me something I've never forgotten, and it's helped me ever since.

I had raised pre-flop with A-K and he called from the button. The flop came all small cards. I checked and he fired a pot-sized bet. I looked at him and said, "You must have a good hand." His reply caught me off guard; "It doesn't matter what cards I have if I know what cards you have."

At first I thought I might have a tell – maybe I hummed when I missed the flop, or I looked away from my chips. It was later that I realized I did have a tell, but it had nothing to do with my physical demeanor. It was the way I played my cards.

Poker is often not so much about the cards you have, but knowing the way your opponent plays. Keeping track of which hands your opponent raises with - and the position from which he raises with them - is a large part of the game.

In a live game, it is hard to remember exactly what cards your opponent has raised with over the years and, if they're good players, those hands will change from time to time. But many poker players are creatures of habit, playing the style they are most familiar with. Online, there is no excuse not to have this knowledge at your fingertips.

Why aren't you playing poker at ultimate bet. 40% Deposit bonus, world poker tour satellites

While playing on Full Tilt Poker, I get to write notes on players and it is a great help. I am always referencing my notes, and they will often tell me which hands an opponent has played in the past. The color-coding makes it even easier for me. I use one color to mark the players who only bet when they have a strong hand, and another color to mark the action players.

When I see a player marked with a certain color, I can safely assume that he's going to overplay his hands. This is a guy I am more willing to call with a hand that might be a little weaker, or a drawing hand after the flop. Why? Because I know that if I hit my hand, he's going to pay me off; I have implied odds to call. With another player, I'll play a little tighter because not getting paid off means my implied odds aren't there. This one bit of information has both increased my winnings and minimized my losses.

Self-awareness is an important part of any endeavor. But in poker, knowing your opponent is just as important as knowing yourself.

Party Poker Bonus Codes - Download party poker and use the following bonus code to redeem your bonus.

25signup25 Get a $25 party poker deposit bonus on your first deposit to partypoker.
chris123 Get a 20% deposit bonus up to $100 on your initial party poker deposit
bigbucks10 Get a free entry to the party poker million dollar tournament with this party poker bonus code.

A little history on Party Poker and its phenominal American / World Poker Growth

Use the following bonus codes after downloading party poker to get a deposit bonus on your intial deposit!
25signup25 Get a $25 party poker deposit bonus on your first deposit to partypoker.
chris123 Get a 20% deposit bonus up to $100 on your initial party poker deposit

Get $100 free for playing online poker at the worlds largest online poker room - Party Poker!

America's Poker Passion Creates Newest Desi Billionaires
From News Sources

21 September 2005 -- Move over, Vinod Khosla (founder of Sun Microsystems) and Sabeer Bhatia (founder of hotmail).

Its time to meet the newest technology billionaires - Anurag Dikshit and his college pal Vikrant Bhargava -- who got there by 'helping people find ways to lose money.'

Dikshit is also the only Indian to be inducted into Red Herring magazine's top 20 technology entrepreneurs of 2005.

Dukshit and Bhargava are the Indian duo behind PartyGaming, an online poker/gambling company based in Gibraltar that went public in London with a valuation estimated at around $10 billion. Thus making them the first-known online gaming billionaires.

Known as The Gibraltar Gang of Four, they are estimated to be worth as follows: Anurag Dikshit (net worth: $3.4 billion), Vikrant Bhargava (net worth: $1 billion). And the two other founders of the company Ruth Parasol (net worth: $1.8 billion), Russell DeLeon (net worth: $1.8 billion).

Recent reports in the press note that 'billionaire status has rarely been achieved so young or so quickly.'

Bhargava hints at the way in which the ride has left them breathless. "When we left university in 1994 - and you have to remember that the Indian Institute of Technology was one of the best schools in all of India - quite a lot of people went off to the US and got involved with dotcoms," he says. "So many people wanted to do something big, but I don't think we ever thought it would be this big. But the motivation was not money. We have done well at something we enjoy doing."

According to one report, PartyGaming's pretax profit has gone from about $6-million (U.S.) three years ago to more than $370-million last year, and in the first quarter this year it made $128-million, or $1.4-million a day.

Over 70,000 poker players - $100 bonus - Low Limit and High Limit Games

Parasol founded the precursor company in 1997 after reportedly running porn sites. She brought on Dikshit to develop proprietary software in 1998. Parasol and her husband DeLeon now consult, while Dikshit runs the group and Bhargava oversees marketing.

Bhargava, aged 32, and originally from Rajasthan, pursued a career in banking before joining the poker party in 2000, having been asked to come on board as marketing director of PartyGaming by his old college friend, Anurag Dikshit. Bhargava, an MBA from IIM (Kolkata) is a whizkid behind the raging success of PartyGaming. Bhargava's experience prior to joining the Group included positions as a credit officer at the Bank of America, where he was responsible for managing credit exposure and revenue for a portfolio of corporate clients, and a business analyst at British Gas in the business development division. Married with two children, he is the only shareholder in the company to be seen in public and is a regular face in the crowd at PartyGaming's live poker tournaments.

A recent article in The Guardian described Mr. Bhargava as a "shy, modest workaholic." The PartyGaming executive, who owns a 15-per-cent stake in the company, told the British newspaper: "I don't think we ever thought it would be this big. But the motivation was not money. We have done well at something we enjoy doing."

Very little is known about Anurag Dikshit, the 33-year-old computer whizzkid who created the technology behind online poker. He is a graduate of IIT Delhi, and has worked as a software developer in the US for various companies such as CMC, Websci and later as a consultant for AT&T before he hooked up with Ruth Parasol in 1998. He owns 40 per cent of the company.

Dikshit developed an innovative platform to facilitate gamblers playing against other online gamblers at individual tables or in large tournaments. The company launched the service in 2001, just as poker enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity in America. As television programs, new books and celebrities got involved with poker, online poker sky-rocketed in popularity. So much so that Dikshit's platform which allowed 20,000 simultaneous users was inadequate and new technology was adopted allowing 70,000 simultaneous users.

The appeal of Dikshit's offering was that poker players could play at any time from anywhere without having to organise a social group to play. Total revenues for online poker from all providers was already a healthy US$92 million in 2002, but it then exploded, surpassing US$1 billion two years later, according to Christiansen Capital Advisors, experts on the online gaming industry. Dikshit's company shrewdly hired a well-known poker player named Mike Sexton as a marketing consultant, and with his help it developed the "PartyPoker.com Million" tournament which was televised throughout the United States and Europe.

Dikshit is not very well known beyond the secretive online gambling industry, which is considered a criminal enterprise in the United States. He is believed to be married to a doctor, to have one child and lives in Gibraltar. He is a vegetarian, does not gamble, wears braces to hold his trousers and has a moustache. He is said to "smile a lot when he talks."

A colleague says that Dikshit's head has not been turned by the company's financial success. "For someone so key to a company that is making the amount of money PartyGaming is making he is very self-deprecating. For Anurag, it's a systems challenge. How do you write software that can handle so many players and how do you deliver the product to customers?"

Dikshit keeps a low profile. Colleagues are unwilling to talk about his home town in India, for fear of identifying his family and jeopardising their security.

But at work, he does not hold back. "He has an unerring habit of asking the best questions of all the founders," says the colleague. "There's also a core of 20 to 30 people in senior management that he recruited and who are clearly extremely loyal to him. He's also not ostentatious. I don't know what he would do with the money if he were to cash out but I'm sure you wouldn't see him buying a palace on an island and a big yacht. He's just not like that."

There is one big caveat to this tale of good fortune. The legality of internet gambling in the US is a point on which the operators and the US department of justice cannot agree. So before Bhargava, Dikshit and their colleagues can turn any part of their theoretical fortunes into cash, the investment community has to be convinced that the business is not vulnerable to being closed down overnight in the US, its biggest market.

Always someone to play with at Party Poker - Make new friends and some money!

Observers say the signs are good. Sportingbet, a quoted British company, paid £169m last year for one of PartyGaming's rivals, Paradise Poker, and has seen its share price surge 150% since then, as investors wake up to the global online poker revolution.

Bhargava says more than 70,000 people play on Party Poker simultaneously at peak hours; two years ago, the figure was fewer than 2,000. Party Poker makes its money by taking a small slice from each pot - the rake, in the jargon.

Describing the way the game is played in cyberspace, a company spokesman said: “Party Poker is a website and 10 people can gather round a virtual table. Party Poker makes its money by taking a small slice from each pot - the rake, in the jargon. "

One of the ironies of PartyGaming is that due to government rules, Indians in India are not allowed to play even though ninety per cent of its employees, totalling about 1,000, are based in Hyderabad.

For tax reasons, Dikshit and Bhargava live in Gibraltar where, according to one report, 'the weather is pleasantly Mediterranean but there cannot be too many distractions on which to squander their easily acquired fortunes.'

The two Indians keep a relatively low profile. The best that the Financial Times could muster up in a recent profile is the revelation that Dikshit 'always smiles a lot when he talks'.

Company executives include Nitin Jain [CIO - PEC, Chandigarh & IIM Kolkata] and Manish Grover [Director Customer Services, IIT Delhi, IIM Kolkata].

Due to concerns about the legality of online gambling in the United States, the company is incorporated in Gibraltar and has no assets in the United States. Nonetheless, U.S. consumers provide around 90% of PartyGaming's revenues.

Globally, about $200m has been wagered in tournaments over the past 24 hours alone, according to the online poker monitoring service, Pokerpulse.com.

Gamblers Anonymous, the gambling counselling service, said it had seen a dramatic rise in the number of calls it receives from people blaming the internet for their addiction.

"Gambling on the internet is like pornography on the internet. Clicking a screen on a computer is much easier for many people than going in to a sex shop and buying the goods face to face. People who are too scared or embarrassed to go in to a betting shop will bet online, and they can also bet unnoticed," said a Gambling Anonymous spokesman.

"As well as removing some of the social constraints around gambling, the internet also removes the physical constraints of having to hand over your cash to gamble. You don't have to keep going to the cash machine. It all happens electronically, which means you keep gambling without it seeming like a real loss. It gives you no time to think and consider your actions."

Celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matt Damon and Tobey Maguire are all regulars at televised poker matches, and have also helped give the game a cult appeal. And so big is the potential for companies to make millions from the business that there is now a rush of other online gambling companies listing in the stock market.

To their credit, the founders are recognising the efforts of their employees to a degree many other billionaires might not. Some 5.6% of PartyGaming, worth $560m or about £300m at the top end of the flotation price range, will be gifted to an employee trust. All staff, from call centre staff in Hyderabad to London techies, will get the chance to earn two or three times their salary in free share options over the next four years.

Latest party poker bonus codes.

If you haven't signed up for party poker yet, you should. Being curious ourselves, we put the question to our pros and the answers we got back included some long-time favorites, along with a few surprises.

While our pros all have poker books that they like, not all of them believe that reading about poker theory is essential to improving their play. In fact, a few of our pros expressed sentiments along these lines:

We're not big fans of poker books. Once you get the basics down, is there something you can read that will drastically change your outlook on poker? Probably not. If there were a secret formula that would guarantee you'd always win, or one certain technique to win the most money, wouldn't everyone be playing that way already? The best teacher is experience. Choose a playing style and game mentality that fits your style, then get out there and actively think about the game. See what works for you and what doesn't. No book will be as effective as your own thought process.

Play with the pro's at Ultimate Bet

Still, many of our pros do have some suggestions about which titles you might want to add to your personal library.

Chris Ferguson believes David Sklansky's Hold 'em for the Advanced Player and Theory of Poker are perhaps the two best books out there. Sklansky's Hold 'em for the Advanced Player and the rest of the Advanced Player series are also solid reads.

Brecher also likes Doyle Brunson's chapter on No-Limit Hold 'em in his Super System for its emphasis on the importance of implied odds (although that's Sklansky's phrase, not Brunson's).

Erik Seidel notes that he hasn't read many of the poker books out there, but his all-time favorite is The Biggest Game in Town by Al Alvarez.

$50,000 Guaranteed Poker Touranment at Paradise Poker

Being friendly with Phil Gordon, Perry Friedman has gotten to read an advance copy of Phil's Little Green Book (due out in October), which he thinks provides the best example of how to teach people to think about the game. He adds that both of Dan Harrington's books are filled with incredible advice for tournament play.

When it comes to "non-strategy" books, the pros' choices are as varied as their playing styles at the table.

Howard Lederer says, "I've recently started reading some books on Zen Buddhism. And poker is most certainly an art form."

Other more poker-related titles on our pros' bookshelves include Positively Fifth Street by James McManus, The Professor, the Banker and the Suicide King byMichael Craig and the recently published Tales from the Tiltboys by the Tiltboys. Some are easy, but some involve the kind of math I can't always do off the top of my head. When that happens, I rely on one of a number of free tools to calculate the probability of winning the hand.

Here's an example based on a hand posted on a website I run:

Our hero was playing at a small stakes No-Limit table online, with $.25-$.50 blinds. At the start of the hand, he had $44. He was dealt Ad-Td and raised to $2. Both blinds called. The flop was Kd-Jd-2c, giving our hero a royal flush draw. The big blind bet $2, hero raised $2 more, the next player called, and the big blind (with more chips than our hero) re-raised all-in.

Should our hero call with his last $38? Let's assume the third player will fold. If our hero were to call and win, he'd be up to $94 (the $18 in the pot, plus his $38 and his opponent's $38). If he wins the hand four times out of 10, on the average he'd have $37.60 after the hand ($94 multiplied by four, and divided by 10). In poker, it's the long run that matters, so he should only call if his probability of winning is greater than 40%. Now he needs to figure out the probability he'd win the hand.

Micro Limit games up to High Stakes at Absolute Poker

The first step is to put his opponent on a range of hands. Sometimes, you can figure out exactly what your opponent must have by the betting or tells. Most of the time, you're left to guess a little. In this situation, the other player probably has a very strong hand, but there's a chance he's bluffing or even semi-bluffing.

The strongest hand our hero could be facing is three kings. He has 11 outs to win the pot - every diamond but the 2d, and three queens. But even if our hero makes his flush or straight, his opponent could still win by making a full house or quads on the last card. I could calculate the probability by hand, but I don't need to.

Instead, I head to the Internet and one of the many free poker odds calculators, such as the one at twodimes.net. Enter "Kd Jd 2c" in the box labeled "Board" and "Ad Td" and "Ks Kc" under "Hands", and click submit. The result says that Ad-Td wins under 34% of the time - less than the 40+% that would make a call the right play. If our hero knows that his opponent had three kings, he should fold. The probabilities for the other possible three-of-a-kinds are the same.

But what if he's up against two pair - kings and jacks? Using the poker calculator again, his probability of winning would be 44%. That's enough to make calling correct. Our hero might also be against other two pairs, which he'd beat a little less often (42%), or A-K (46%). He might even already be ahead if he's against an aggressive player who would semi-bluff with something like Q-T (81%) or Qd-9d (82%).

Play at the worlds largest online poker room - PartyPoker!!!

Having calculated the probabilities of winning, our hero is now left with the subjective part of the answer, guessing the probabilities of what the other player has. I would guess that it's more than twice as likely that the player has two pair, or A-K, or even some weaker hand than that he has three of a kind. And I would guess that maybe 5% to 10% of the time, Ad-Td is actually ahead. I told our hero that, based on the numbers, I would have called.

Our hero did call, and the other player had K-J, giving our hero a 44% chance of winning the hand. The turn card was the 2d, but the river was a jack and our hero's flush lost to a full house. The river card was a tough break, but playing by the numbers, he still made the right play.

It's good to know the numbers, but it's equally important to know how to get them. And if you use the available tools whenever you aren't sure, you'll start to remember them when they come up at the table. In poker, every tool in your toolbox brings you one step closer to mastery of the game.

Ask the pro's is a free publication to all poker players registered and playing at fulltiltpoker.com Sign up now to get poker tips and strategies from the poker professionals.

Make your party poker bonus code payoff - manage your money and you'll have a bankroll plus your deposit bonus

By Aaron Bartley
Brought to you by Full Tilt Poker - Receive 100% of your initial deposit up to $600.

One of the most important poker lessons has nothing to do with how to play Aces in late position or how to adjust for the maniac in seat three. It's how to manage your money in a way that will make it grow as quickly as possible with minimal risk.

Some of the most highly skilled players in the game have gone broke (repeatedly) simply because they played too high, too fast, too often. How can we make sure this problem never happens to us? It isn't a matter of smarts, but rather, one of discipline.

The most important step is to be honest with yourself. You should know your relative skill level at all times. Suppose you're a $1/$2 No-Limit Hold 'em player who's had a great night, and you're toying with taking a shot at the $5/$10 game. Your bankroll is up to $1,500, but you would need to bring at least $500 to the table in order to play comfortably at the higher level.

Join the World Poker Tour in Aruba!

Why would you risk putting a third of your bankroll on the table to play in the $5/$10 game? For starters, your bankroll isn't big enough for the stake; more importantly, you also need to consider that the skill level of the $5/$10 players is greater than the competition you're used to. (That's not always true, of course. There are some very skilled $1/$2 players and some weak $5/$10 players, but it's not unreasonable to assume that the higher-level games are filled with better players.)

This is where self-control comes in. One slip-up can spell disaster for a bankroll, and watching six months of hard work disappear in six hours of foolish play is enough to crush anyone's spirits.

The safest course of action is to continue doing what you're doing. You're beating the $1/$2 game for a tidy profit every week - stay right where you are. Continue proving that you can beat the game. While you're doing that, your bankroll should grow accordingly. Beating a game for six days is proof of very little. Beating the same game for six months is better evidence that you are a winning player.

Start tracking your results. You can buy tracking software or easily create a database of your own. Put in all of your information after each time you play - limits, time at the tables, profits/losses. Go over your information every few weeks, both for your recent play and for your entire poker lifetime. Try to spot bad trends before they get out of hand. If you've been playing well at a certain level over a long period of time, only then should you consider moving up to the next highest level.

Above all, know where your money is at all times and how it is being used. Ask yourself, "Is this too much risk for me considering my current bankroll?" If the answer is yes, do the responsible thing and change tables. Months later, you'll be thankful you did.

Party poker bonus codes drawing in all the college kids playing poker

More young adults are making online poker a career choice, but is the risk of addiction too high?
By AMY ELIZABETH OSGOOD, Courier Lee News Service

MADISON, Wis. --- Brett Hartfiel, 22, is his own boss this summer. He wakes up at about 10 a.m. and works sporadically throughout the day.

If his friends go to the beach, he can go with them. If he wants to work in his pajamas, he can. That's because Hartfiel has turned online gambling, a pastime that has recently exploded among college students, into his summer job. In the past six or seven weeks, he has made more than $6,000.

"I told my friends, 'I'm going to be a poker pro for three months and see how it goes,' " he says.

Professional poker has its perks for the recent University of Wisconsin at Madison graduate. Hartfiel job-hunts and fills out applications online while he plays. Plus he can enjoy the college lifestyle for one last summer.

"There's something to say for getting to work in a pair of shorts and a 'Got Brett?' T-shirt," says his roommate, Luke Louison, nodding to Hartfiel's personalized loungewear.

Hartfiel plays no-limit Texas hold'em, the most popular online poker game "because it's the fastest and the riskiest," according to Hartfiel. He mostly plays on Pacific Poker, but he also plays on PartyPoker and PokerStars.

He has won most of his money playing "heads-up" matches against one other person. Each player puts in $100, the Web site takes $5 from each person, so the pot totals $190. Winner takes the pot. He has just started playing $100 buy-in tournaments. He says winners of those events make about $25,000.

Hartfiel says he has made more than $15,000 since he began gambling online last November. He has been playing live poker with friends since high school.

"I was skeptical at first, but a few of my friends started winning a lot of money, and I knew I was better than them," Hartfiel says.

Make your first deposit count at Ultimate Bet - 40% up to $200 Bonus!

What about work?

As he began making money gambling, his job as a fitness consultant for the university's recreational facilities became less attractive.

"First semester, I was working like 20 hours a week. Second semester, I went down to working four hours a week," he says. "Now I don't work at all."

Maybe not in the conventional sense of the word, but Hartfiel does take gambling seriously. He gambles for about 50 hours a week, and he plans to pay taxes on his winnings.

He uses an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of his games. Columns list opponents' names, their wins and losses (he has played some more than 20 times) and each opponent's playing style.

A player can be aggressive or "tight," according to Hartfiel.

"I change my style depending on theirs," he says. "If they're aggressive, I like to play tight, only my good hands. I can take advantage by acting like I'm weak when actually I'm strong. When a player is tight, I will be more aggressive. You can take most of the pots when they're really tight."

Hartfiel keeps in mind when players might be most vulnerable, like late at night, when they've probably just come home from a night of drinking.

"I find that when I come back from the bars, that's when they play the worst," he says.

He also keeps track of when easy opponents habitually play.

"There are guys that go on there certain times a day every day who I know where to find," he says.

Hartfiel thinks his system gives him an advantage. "It's always smart if you can get an edge on the game, write stuff down about people," he says.

Million Dollar Freeroll - Only at Paradise Poker!

Studying the game

The Internet changes the game of poker in many ways. Games go a lot faster than the friendly Sunday afternoon games at Aunt Martha's because things such as shuffling and conversation are eliminated. Players can make more money because they can play more hands per hour, and they can play at high-stakes tables, which most wouldn't otherwise have access to unless they were in Las Vegas.

In addition, players don't have to worry about their poker faces when they're sitting in front of their computers.

More than 1.8 million people play online poker each month, wagering an average of $200 million a day, Sports Illustrated reported in May. Although the U.S. Department of Justice considers online gambling illegal, the government essentially looks the other way. Individuals aren't normally prosecuted, according to the magazine.

Web sites are hosted overseas in "tax havens" such as Gibraltar and Costa Rica to avoid U.S. law, the magazine reported. Many college students have taken advantage of this legal gray area. Online poker's anonymity and high stakes contribute to its popularity among today's Internet-savvy students.

"It's the chance to hit it big," Hartfiel says.

The University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center found the number of 18 to 22-year-old college males who play cards for money doubled in the last year, according to Sports Illustrated.

Online statistics are hard to come by, however. Brian Rust, administrative program specialist at the UW-Madison's division of information technology, had no information regarding online gambling on campus. An unscientific trip to the library, though, illustrates online poker's popularity. While studying for exams in a computer lab on the UW-Madison campus, Hartfiel often saw poker games on students' monitors. He also played while he studied.

For some students, however, online poker can become more than a study break. It can become an addictive, expensive habit. Successes like Hartfiel's accompany sadder stories.

Poker room bonus codes from the bellagio Las Vegas get yourself into the world poker tour satellite worth $18,500

WPT Qualifiers - Win an $18,500 seat courtesy of pokerroom.com + get a 40% signup bonus up to $200. The company has a market capitalization of about $357 million.

"This was a total surprise," company spokeswoman Jackie Lapin told Reuters. "The board will review this bid."

She did not know when the board planned to meet.
